Court power of attorney in the UAE

A court power of attorney sets out the powers granted in relation to a case and court proceedings, subject to the rules governing representation and appearance before the court. We prepare the power of attorney and coordinate its notarization route.

Legal basis

Article 870 of the UAE Civil Transactions Law, issued by Federal Decree-Law No. 25 of 2025 and in force since 1 June 2026, requires a special power of attorney specifying the type of act for pleading before the court, and for settlement, acknowledgement, arbitration, and directing and accepting the oath.

Who can appear before the court?

The power of attorney defines the judicial powers granted to the agent, but a POA does not automatically make any person eligible to appear or plead before a court. Court representation remains subject to the applicable representation rules. In the cases permitted by law, a party may be represented by an authorised advocate, a spouse, or a relative or in-law up to the fourth degree. Representation of a private legal person by one of its employees is subject to additional legal requirements.
