General power of attorney in the UAE

A general power of attorney grants the agent powers in general wording; the law and the text of the power of attorney set the limits of those powers. We prepare the power of attorney and coordinate its notarization route.

What a general power of attorney covers

Article 871 of the UAE Civil Transactions Law, issued by Federal Decree-Law No. 25 of 2025 and in force since 1 June 2026, provides that a power of attorney in general terms, not accompanied by anything clarifying its purpose, authorises the agent to carry out acts of administration only.

Under the law, acts of administration include leasing for a term not exceeding three years, preservation and maintenance, collecting dues, and paying debts.

Acts that need specific authority

Article 870 provides that every act outside administration and preservation requires a special power of attorney specifying the type of act, in particular donations, sale, settlement, mortgage, acknowledgement, arbitration, directing and accepting the oath, and pleading before the court.

The scope is set by the wording of the powers, not by the title of the document. A document titled “general power of attorney” authorises a sale only if it states the sale.
